Large Nordic Bank Data Centre Strategy

Developing a Data Centre Strategy that aligns and anticipates business needs, improves reliability and reduces costs.

Challenge

The Bank’s DC portfolio consisted of several sub-optimal data centres with aging infrastructure, thereby increasing failure risk and growing cost. Their relationship with their incumbent supplier was declining rapidly which had led to a significant increase its operational risk profile. A decision was reached to augment the Banks operating model and implement a new DC strategy which presented the need to find and select new fit-for purpose DC facilities to meet the Banks stringent requirements.

Goals

In retaining CST, our client was seeking to: Reduce operational risk, manage existing and future cost by using CSTechnologies colocation market knowledge and leverage CST expertise in assessment and transition management.

Solution

CST worked with the Bank to leverage its new DC strategy to provide subject matter expertise and create an RFP with two separate scenarios designed to meet their requirements. CST and the Bank collaborated to create the RFP guidelines, engage vendors, and manage the RFP process while supporting the creation of a fit-for-purpose DC contract. Reports were created and presented to the Banks CTO and COO outlining the strategy and recommendations together with supporting information to enable fact based decision-making for facility and vendor selection. CST established procedure and process by which these critical IT infrastructure decisions could be vetted and approved, and in addition led the structured meetings so that clear consensus could be reached.

Results

The Bank was able to successfully lease two state of the art data centres at a substantial reduction to the market rate. RFP efforts were completed on time and allowed for growth projections to be accommodated. The implemented solution provided a stable platform with a reduced operational risk profile – allowing the Bank to consolidate their DC portfolio and build a robust IT environment to support its customer services.
